office investigate - carpenter from Nazareth and
underage mother provisionally arrested
BETHLEHEM, JUDEA - In the early hours of the morning,
the authorities were alerted by a concerned citizen.
He had discovered a young family living in a stable.
On arrival, the social service officers, who were
supported by police officers, found a baby who had
been placed in a manger wrapped in strips of cloth by
his mother, a certain Maria H. from Nazareth, who was
only 14 years old.
During the arrest of the mother and child, a man who
was later identified as Joseph H., also from Nazareth,
tried to stop the social workers. Joseph, supported by
shepherds present and three unidentified foreigners,
tried to stop the child from being taken away, but was

Maria is in the district hospital in Bethlehem for
medical and psychiatric examinations. She can expect
to be charged with negligence.
Her mental state is scrutinized because she claims
that she is still a virgin and that the infant is from
God.
An official statement from the head of the psychiatric
ward reads:
"It's not up to me to tell people what to believe, but
if that belief leads to a newborn being endangered, as
in this case, you have to classify those people as
dangerous. The fact that drugs, presumably distributed
by the foreigners present, were on site does not help
to inspire confidence. However, I am sure that with
the necessary treatment, all those involved will be
able to become normal members of our society again in
a few years."

celebrate the newborn on his birthday. A spokesman for
