Preface to the 1st edition

[The criminal “Christians” claim that they had proselytized “peacefully” - the Germanic tribes had voluntarily accepted the criminal “Christianity” - 4500 murdered Saxons are only a blemish] (p.1)

Again and again Christians make the claim that Christianity was by no means forced on the Germanic tribes, but rather that they voluntarily accepted it and spread it further. The slaughter of the 4,500 Saxons was certainly a regrettable oversight, or had merely political reasons, not Christian ones. All in all so: under these circumstances, it should not be possible to claim that Christianity would be opposed to the German character, since history teaches the opposite. [S.1]

[There is a need for factual studies of how the “Christianization” really was - and no falsification of history by the criminal church] (p.1)

We want to be objectively about this history matter here, "sine ira et studio" ("without anger and ambition"): we want to know about the the working and war methods of the supranational power of Rome. Answering this question is interesting for us in a historical, religious and cultural-historical aspect. The events have to be examinated carefully controlling all historical sources, because we do not want to be stultified by historical falsifications by any side, neither the Nordic view, the Protestant view or the Roman Catholic view. Here are some examples how different are the claims about the events.

[Norway and Iceland: Criminal “Christians” with violent missionizing with torture + murder] (p.1)

Prof. Dr. Rudolf Meissner states in his book "The North Germans and Christianity" (orig. German: “Die Nordgermanen und das Christentum”), Bonn 1929:

“The missionary history of Norway and Iceland knows nothing of Christian martyrs, but it does know of non-believers (heathens) who preferred to endure torture and death rather than be unfaithful to their faith.”

In contrast, the writer Paul Graben claims in the essay "The people of the old Icelandic sagas. - A Contribution to the Knowledge of Germanic Essence" (orig.German: “Die Menschen der altisländischen Sagas. - Ein Beitrag zur Kenntnis germanischen Wesens”) (in: 'The faithful Eckardt' (orig. German: ‘Der getreue Eckardt’), 1930, issue 5):

“Of any Christian zeal for faith or even fanatical proselytizing measures ... there was not the least to be noticed.” [S.1]

On the other hand, an Old Nordic scholar of great expertise and rank, Prof. Dr. Gustav Neckel, in his essay "The value of Icelandic literature especially for the knowledge of the early Geman period" (orig. German: “Der Wert der isländischen Literatur besonders für die Erkenntnis der gemanischen Frühzeit”) (in: "German Iceland Research" (orig. German: “Deutsche Islandforschung”, Breslau 1930), states among other things the following about the violent measures of the proselytizers [p.1]:

“Particular attention must be paid to the mutilations and other cruelties which the proselytizers threaten and, if necessary, commit with cold blood, as if such things were only in order, although the enemies are never committing such crimes, and the sources about purely pagan times in the North know of nothing of this kind of behavior. Additionally we have to consider the confirmed near connection of torture instinct and sexual instinct as also the improbability of the assumption that the conversion methods of a doctrine originating in [p.1] Palestine, Greece and Rome were at home among the late subjugated Germanic tribes. Therefore we can hardly doubt that these were foreign customs that had accompanied the new religion from the South, or ultimately from the Orient.” [p.1-2]

In contrast, Mr. Dr. H Getzeny has done a series of statements in the media about the "Thule" Series in the magazine "The Lion of Diederich" ("Diederichslöwe") (Jena 1930, magazine no.2) where he is warning from the "worst danger that threatens historical self-determination today: the blind idealization of the Germanic original state based on a ethnic ideology. It is not a state of paradise that stands at the beginning of our history. The Thule volumes clearly show this. Christianity does not mean a break, no destruction of irreplaceable Germanic heritage.” [S.2]

There was another Old Nordic Scholar and religion scientist, Mr. Dr. Bernhard Kummer. He was not an ethnic extremist and he was not a Christian extremist either. He just had stated this "rupture" and destruction of high Germanic ethnic values by missionary work, and he was especially indicating the violent methods of the converters in 1927 already in the book "Midgard's Downfall" (orig. German: "Midgards Untergang") publication of the research institute of comparitive religion history of Leipzig University) and then there was an essay with the same statement: "The Significance of Old Norse Literature for the History of Religion and Missiology" (orig. German: “Die Bedeutung des altnordischen Schrifttums für Religionsgeschichte und Missionskunde”) in the review for missiology and religious studies (Zeitschrift für Missionskunde und Religionswissenschaft), Görlitz 1928 [p.2 ]

[Walter Baetke claims: All have “voluntarily” accepted the “Christian” superstition with the fantasy Jesus from Asia and the fantasy god from Rome - with blood rite, dead body rite, cannibalism, and with fantasy devil and fantasy hell, etc.] (p.2)

Also in the book by Walter Baetke "Religion and Christiandom according to species" (“Arteigene Religion und Christentum”), the conversion by force is denied. Baetke writes there: “... It is just a historical fact, and it's not possible to destroy this truth by any curse against "the crime of christianization" that the conversion in general was p r o c e d e d   v o l u n t a r i l y. This does not count only for South and East Germanic peoples, but also for the  S c a n d i n a v i a n s  i n  t h e  N o r t h. The isolated martyrs that the religious zeal of the two Olafs had on their consciences are exceptions that confirm the rule.” [S.2]

So we see: there is a constant fight of two opinions - at one side there are scholars of the caliber of G. Neckel, R. Meissner and B. Kummer (the list could be extended considerably), on the other side there are theologians and apparently often writers not entirely free of Christian “ideology”. Among them, however, the last case, W. Baetke's statement, is particularly striking, because he himself collaborated on the large series of German [p.2] translations of the most important Old Norse literature, the collection “Thule”, and one would therefore have to assume that he knew the contents of these sources exactly. Now we have compiled the old traditional heritage, and with this basis of source reports the neutral reader can just form his own judgment if in the ancient North and in other parts of Germanic peoples any violent measures and governmental extortions were applied for installing Christianity, or if these attacks were just rare and individual cases and if it was normal that the peoples accepted the conversion voluntarily. There are more Nordic sources completing the rare reports of other Germanic tribes. [p.3]

Preface to the 2nd edition

The 2nd edition of this work has been reviewed and remained essentially unchanged, with the exception of an essay by my part from the "Nordic Newspaper" (“Nordische Zeitung”), which has been inserted here as another proof against the Christian claims that the Christianization had been proceeded without any force but claiming that paganism had lost it's own inner force. Let us never forget what Christians have done to us pagans over many centuries!
