approximately
370,000 Israelis have left the country with the
latest update spanning to the end of November. According to
the statistics, Israelis are increasingly seeking refuge
abroad, particularly in Europe, with a growing interest in
purchasing real estate across several European countries.
Israeli economic newspaper, “The Marker” highlighted that
Isreali families have been showing keen interest in buying
real estate and homes abroad since October 7.
By the
end of October, about 230,309 Israelis immigrated, while
an additional 139,839 left during November,
according to the data and in tandem with Israel’s Ministry
of Interior, Jo24 reported.
This number could actually be
higher at 500,000 Israelis leaving the country
Meanwhile, estimates from the
website "
Zaman Yisrael" suggest that this
number could be higher, with reports indicating that
over
500,000 Israelis have left the country,
surpassing the number of returnees and new immigrants. The
website anticipates a potential increase in departures,
particularly among Israelis who were already residing abroad
or traveling during the Jewish holidays in September.
Furthermore, Israel’s war on Gaza has significantly reduced
the influx of tourists coming into Israel, with only 2,000
immigrants arriving since October 7, compared to the average
of about 4,500 before the war.
This signifies a decline of over 70 percent in
immigration rates to Israel.
Jolie, a 34-year-old who recently joined the Israeli
community in Portugal, shared her story with The Marker
newspaper. Having fled Ashkelon due to the war on Gaza, she
expressed no intention of returning to live in the country.
Jolie recounted her immigration to Israel in 1995 and her
current employment in Lisbon as a content filtering
supervisor.

owners of a real estate investment company, who moved to
Porto, Portugal, six years ago. The influx of Israelis to
Portugal has increased during the war on Gaza, with many
initially coming to escape and subsequently exploring
possibilities for long-term residence.

survey conducted by the Geographic Mapping Group of the Real
Estate Center last September. Approximately 20 percent of

percent, followed by the United States at 30 percent,
and then Cyprus and Portugal.
A month after the aggression, real estate offices for
Israelis abroad reported an increase in inquiries from
individuals and families seeking to buy property in
Portugal,

revolved around investment in real estate and tourist

Nir Shmol, CEO of a real estate company in Athens, noted

Reason 4: No major career opportunities

income on basic needs: rent, food, and transportation --
There is nothing left for vacations, improving life, or
saving -- many parents work double or have two jobs
each, and they hardly see their children to pay their
bills - this is no longer a life, this is no longer a
'promised land'.

Die griechische Ägäis statt Tel Aviv, mediterrane
Leichtigkeit statt Alarmzustand – immer mehr
Israelis suchen fern dem Heiligen Land ein neues Leben.
Wie die griechische Plattform To Proto Thema
kürzlich schrieb, haben sich seit dem
Angriff der Hamas auf Israel am 7. Oktober 2023 rund
10.000 Israelis dauerhaft in Griechenland
niedergelassen. Insgesamt sollen in den letzten zwei
Jahren etwa 80.000 jüdische Bürger das Land verlassen
haben. Die Gründe sind vielfältig – und tiefgreifend.
Approximately 10,000 Israelis have chosen Greece as
their new home in the last two years – a third of them
since October 7, 2023 alone. This is a growing exodus
from a Israel that is shaken by war, societal
division, and political radicalization.
The Greek Aegean instead of Tel Aviv, Mediterranean
ease instead of a state of alarm – more and more
Israelis are seeking a new life far from the Holy Land.
As the Greek platform To Proto Thema recently reported (link),
around 10,000 Israelis have permanently settled in
Greece since the attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7,
2023. In total, it is estimated that about 80,000 Jewish
citizens have left the country in the last two years.
The reasons are varied – and profound.
Many of them are not only fleeing from the current
war in Gaza, but also from the societal
developments in their own country. The newspaper quotes
an Israeli business consultant who left Tel Aviv
immediately after the attack and moved to Greece with
her two small children. Her statements provide deep
insight:
"Israel is no longer a democracy. This war is unjust, it
is not legitimate. And we started it."
She openly criticizes the political climate in Israel,
speaking of structural violence and a repressive climate
of opinion:
"If you do not think like the government today, you are
declared an enemy. People hate me when I speak like
this. But someone has to do it."
Viele von ihnen fliehen nicht nur vor dem
aktuellen Krieg in Gaza, sondern auch vor der
gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung im eigenen Land. Die
Zeitung zitiert eine israelische Unternehmensberaterin,
die Tel Aviv direkt nach dem Angriff verließ und mit
ihren zwei kleinen Kindern nach Griechenland zog. Ihre
Aussagen lassen tief blicken:
«Israel ist keine Demokratie mehr. Dieser Krieg ist
ungerecht, er ist nicht legitim. Und wir haben ihn
begonnen.»
Sie kritisiert offen das politische Klima in
Israel, spricht von struktureller Gewalt und
einem repressiven Meinungsklima:
«Wenn du heute nicht wie die Regierung denkst, wirst
du zum Feind erklärt. Die Menschen hassen mich, wenn
ich so spreche. Aber jemand muss es tun.»

– its economic stability. Many Israelis already perceive
Athens, Thessaloniki, or Crete as a sort of 'second
home.' The pragmatic attitude of the Greek authorities
regarding visa extensions and residency issues for
Israelis also plays a role.
Doch nicht nur die Lebensqualität ist eine
Motivation für einen Umzug. Es ist vor allem
das Bedürfnis nach Sicherheit – vor Bomben, aber auch
vor innenpolitischer Radikalisierung –, das viele in die
Emigration treibt. Die aktuelle israelische Regierung
unter Benjamin Netanjahu stößt bei einem Teil der
Bevölkerung auf wachsende Ablehnung, nicht nur wegen
ihrer Kriegsführung, sondern auch aufgrund eines
autoritäreren Regierungskurses und zunehmender
Polarisierung.
Die Auswanderung nach Griechenland ist ein
stilles, aber deutliches Signal: Immer mehr
Israelis ziehen die Konsequenz aus einer politischen und
gesellschaftlichen Entwicklung, mit der sie sich nicht
mehr identifizieren können. Und während die offizielle
Politik in Tel Aviv weiter auf Eskalation setzt, wählen
andere den Ausweg über das Mittelmeer – hin zu einem
Leben, das sie als freier, sicherer und menschlicher
empfinden.
But it is not only the quality of life that motivates a
move. It is primarily the need for security – from
bombs, but also from internal political radicalization –
that drives many to emigration. The current Israeli
government under Benjamin Netanyahu faces growing rejection
from a segment of the population, not only due to its
warfare but also because of an increasingly authoritarian
government course and growing polarization.
Emigration to Greece is a quiet but clear signal:
More and more Israelis are drawing the consequence of a
political and social development with which they can no
longer identify. And while the official policy in Tel Aviv
continues to escalate, others choose the way out across the
Mediterranean – towards a life that they perceive as freer,
safer, and more humane.
